Frequently Asked Questions
Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural substance the ear produces to clean and protect the ear canal. It traps dust and germs and normally clears out on its own.
Buildup happens when wax is produced faster than it clears, or when cotton buds push it deeper into the ear.
Common symptoms are muffled hearing, ear fullness, mild pain, ringing (tinnitus), or itching.
An ENT specialist can safely remove wax using microsuction, ear irrigation, or special instruments. Cotton buds should never be used at home.
See an ENT if you have hearing loss, ear pain, discharge, or if home ear drops do not clear the blockage.
