Stapedotomy
Stapedotomy is a surgical technique that involves replacing the middle ear’s innermost bone (stapes) with a prosthetic. This treatment is used to help otosclerotic individuals with increasing hearing loss caused by spongy bone hardening around the base of the stapes.
Indications
Conductive hearing loss that worsens over time
Stapedotomy is performed under either local or general anesthesia depending on the surgeon’s preference and experience. This surgery can be performed using an Endoscope or a Microscope. Endoscopic stapedotomy avoids any external visible incision and scar. In microscopic technique, the middle ear is reached by an endaural incision, a tiny incision made above the ear canal. The eardrum is subsequently raised, allowing access to and exposure of the middle ear. The mobility of the ossicular chain is examined, and the diagnosis is verified. The superstructure of the stapes is removed, and a hole is drilled in the footplate of the stapes. The surgery is finished when a piston-type prosthesis is placed into the stapedotomy hole.
